A practical training outlining strategy to improve suppliers’ involvement in the New Product Development/Product Enhancement projects. It identifies the motivation for improvement, the plan to define and implement the best Supplier Involvement Model, and the tools to assess and address supplier capabilities, often underestimated and not properly documented.
The methodology is intended to foster stronger relationships between the client organisation and its suppliers, with the goal of improving product development and project delivery. The training focuses on APQP tools’ planning as a basis for suppliers’ effective integration and the roles of suppliers in different phases.
Duration
The training lasts two days in its fully blown format that allows sufficient time for the course content to be absorbed and processed by the participants. However, it is possible to scale down the training to 1 day, subject to agreement at the initial consultation.
The real application of Suppliers’ Sourcing Strategy and Integration becomes part of the follow-up to the 3P workshop. After the 3P, the team would have had a fairly clear picture of what kind of suppliers are required to support the program. A scalable 2-day implementation workshop is an integral part of the OPINEX Program.
Content
- The motivation for improving suppliers’ involvement and how we can measure the improvements
- Typical challenges in suppliers’ integration (lack of sufficient knowledge of suppliers’ capabilities, not a unified view on suppliers by various stakeholders in the client organisation, lack of effective integration tools in the client innovation programs etc.)
- Explained the four core phases of the Supplier Involvement Model and what each of them entails: Supplier Pre-Selection, Supplier Feasibility & Selection, Product & Process Validation, and Launch Readiness
- Defined the three core elements of suppliers’ integration: Relationship/Cultural capability, Design Capability, and Manufacturing Capability. Assessment of the three elements will jointly give the best solution for scaled suppliers’ involvement
- APQP tools introduced as they logically drive development of the product quality plan, which also support the definition of the suppliers’ responsibilities in delivery of the quality plan.
- Make-buy studies discussed as a way of challenging our supply chain design and finding the best fit for suppliers and what they can deliver
- Tool for Suppliers’ Capability Assessment discussed and shared with the participants
- Parts criticality matrix (tool) explained as a way of prioritizing suppliers based on parts value and risk
Delivery options
- Initial consultation: virtual 2-hour meeting (free of charge)
- Virtual delivery of training modules (4 half-day sessions)
- Physical on-site training delivery over 2 full days is a possibility
- Agile, iterative & practical (on-site) facilitation and support in developing & implementing
Suppliers’ Integration in a real project.
- This can be done as a standalone effort and can typically take two on-site days.
- The other option is to execute this workshop as part of the follow-up activity after the 3P workshop.
Who is it for?
- Project/Program Manager
- Product Management
- Procurement (Strategic and Factory)
- Internal Manufacturing Quality Assurance
- Supplier Quality Assistance
- Sales
- Production Technology
- Factory Equipment Maintenance

Objectives
- Highlight the importance and complexity of managing and integrating suppliers in Innovation and product development. This is not just a procurrent exercise.
- Create a sense of urgency to focus the organisation on this topic
- Define a practical working model for integration: Supplier Involvement Model and make it easily usable by the organisation.
- Train the organisation to better share supplier knowledge (Suppliers’ Capability Assessment) and to consolidate it for the benefit of making timely sourcing decisions.
- Define the ways to design supplier integration by looking at three core capabilities: Relationship, Design, and Manufacturing
- Scale and customize the use of APQP toolbox in the context of managing suppliers and achieving product quality
Outcomes
- Aligned view on supply base and pre-sourcing decisions made with ease and confidence
- Suppliers’ criticality to program delivery is well understood and managed by considering three core elements of successful integration (Supplier Involvement Model)
- Allows early mobilisation of internal resources (not just procurement) in enabling proactive suppliers’ integration in the Innovation program
